What is RYLA? Rotary Youth Leadership Awards emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to:
- Demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth
- Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
- Encourage leadership of youth by youth
- Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities
In 2017, we organised one in Parys on behalf of our Rotary District. Internationally acclaimed Annette Jahnel, the first woman to drive round the world, opened on the Thursday night with an inspirational video and talk: Energy, Environment, Economy, Evolution, Equality and Education. On Friday night, representatives from Youth forLions answered questions following a private screening of the full feature Blood Lions that sheds light on South African predator breeding, canned hunting and lion bone trade.
Other activities included swimming, hiking, leadership training, an educational game drive, finance management, orienteering, fly-fishing clinic, potjiekos competition and survival adventures.
The 2018 RYLA Camp is being organised by the Rotary Club of Ladybrand. It will be held from Thursday 1st March to Sunday 4th March 2018 at On Track Adventures, situated on a farm close to Hobhouse in the Free State.
